TERRASEM C6 successful in Czech Republic

PROAGRO, s. r. o., Bučovice near Vyškov (CZ)

In autumn 2008 the company PROAGRO in Bučovice near Vyškov purchased a Pöttinger TERRASEM C 6 seed drill with a working width of 6 metres. They put it to immediate use with 65 hectares of winter barley and around 220 hectares of wheat, of which 35 hectares were mulch drilled on top of maize. So far this year they have already sown 60 % of the crop with the TERRASEM; 30 hectares of white radish, 30 hectares of pulses and 20 hectares of peas.
The two managing directors of PROAGRO, Jan Pavlík (Ing.) and Pavel Halla (Ing.), report on their results.

TERRASEM C6 in practice

PROAGRO farms 750 hectares of arable land and focuses mainly on plant production. Their land is located between 220 and 270 metres above sea level. The terrain is hilly and the earth is sandy loam, clay and is heavy. We sow winter wheat, spring barley, peas, poppy, rape, sunflowers and maize plus white radish, pulses and flax, and sometimes grasses.. Specialising on traditional crops brings in good results, as reported by Jan Pavlík and Pavel Halla. This year we had very good results with 7.5 t/ha on average for winter wheat, 5 t for spring barley and 3.3 t for rapeseed. "As far as soil cultivation is concerned, we turn over the stubble after the rape harvest and then there is another cultivation pass immediately before using the seed drill. Last year we sowed the winter wheat at the end of October after the maize harvest, right into the mulch with a large quantity of harvest trash. We were a bit concerned about how this would work out, but the yields were very good. We sowed approx. 5 million seeds per hectare into the mulch after the maize on that land; normally we only sow 4 to 4.5 million. There were two kinds that produce more than 6 t/ha hat", reports Pavel Halla. According to Jan Pavlík, who is responsible for the technology, the TERRASEM is an extremely reliable machine. It is easy to set the seed flowrate and the machine is very good at maintaining the desired flowrate without any deviations. "It is also possible to set the seed placement depth with precision, and the machine keeps to it. Everything is perfect after the machine has been set up - the crops grow at a uniform and steady rate. Regardless of whether we sow on softer or harder ground, the seed drill always operates consistently. The land wheel makes an important contribution here. The TERRASEM seed drill can achieve a great deal in a single shift. On a good piece of land it can operate at between 10 and 12 km per hour, so it is possible to achieve 35 to 40 hectares per day.  With a seed tank volume of 3,000 litres, two sacks of seed are easily accommodated, which is enough for around 10 hectares. We fill the seed tank out in the field. We were particularly impressed with the way the seed drill cuts consistently into the ground, which was especially noticeable when mulch drilling after the maize harvest. The seed drill was able to handle the large quantity of harvest trash very well; it worked into the ground perfectly and sowed to a very high quality. One day we harvested the maize and the next day we went out with the seed drill. The special working quality and high performance of the seed drill is a world apart from the traditional technology that we used to use. We have managed to dramatically reduce the time required for sowing", sums up Jan Pavlík.

Following this harvest PROAGRO have also been using a TERRADISC 6000 T disc harrow with a working width of 6 metres. This equipment does all our stubble cultivation and soil preparation before sowing rape and our winter crops. And if there is a "harder" spring then it will also be used to break up clods and level the field. The TERRADISC is equipped with packer rollers, which are very good especially in damp conditions, because the machine operates to a very high quality and does not clog. The soil surface can be broken up, compressed and levelled. In one year the machine is expected to process 600 to 700 hectares, possibly more depending on conditions and crop production. Like the seed drill, the TERRADISC operates together with tractors delivering 280 horsepower. Average consumption with the TERRADISC is 8 litres of diesel per hectare, even on challenging land.
