Self-loading wagon versus round baler

A comparison test from Finland

During a test comparison of processes in Laukaa (Finland), Pöttinger has again proven the cost effectiveness of the loader wagon. Back in 2001 tests were conducted in Brandenburg to compare a Pöttinger Jumbo with a self-propelled harvester, which confirmed the high performance and economic advantages offered by the loader wagon system.

Round or square balers are often used for harvesting grass silage. Small and medium-sized farms in particular frequently use silage bales. At the end of July 2006 a test was conducted in Laukaa (Finland) together with the TTS (an agricultural research institute) putting a Pöttinger Faro 4000 L against a round baler.
An area of around 7 hectares was harvested using each process. Due to the very dry summer the yield was around 15 tonnes per hectare. This is rather low for Finland.

A comparison was made between the performance, diesel consumption and the overall costs of each process. The silage was unloaded in a clamp and then compressed with a suitable tractor. The baler produced round bales which were then wrapped.

The Pöttinger Faro 4000 L achieved a performance of 58 tonnes per hour. The round baler achieved 28.7 tonnes per hour. This corresponds to an advantage with the loader wagon of 35.3% and clearly demonstrates the high performance of even the smallest Pöttinger silage wagon. Despite the higher performance, diesel consumption for the loader wagon process was 12% (or 0.8 litres/tonne) lower.

The costs for the silage harvest amount to the following per hectare, depending on the annual area covered:

Annual area Loader wagon Round baler
100 ha 119,60 € 135,00 €
200 ha 75,30 € 82,40 €
300 ha 60,50 € 64,00 €
Pöttinger has yet again proven that the loader wagon is the most cost-effective harvest process for grass silage.
